Finding U.S. Navy Shipmates

The USS Rankin Association claims to be World Class at finding former U.S. Navy shipmates. Back in 2003-2004, we located every one of the 437 officers who served on our ship from 1945-1971. The last one found was LTJG John Smith, who was only aboard for a short time in the early 1960s. We found his college, but they had closed down years ago. His very active high school reunion group was pretty sure he was deceased. But we found him.

We also know the name, rank or rate, and service number of all or almost all of the enlisted men who ever served on the ship.

Many feasible and productive ways are being mentioned for finding naval crew members and members of other military units of men. Does anyone have any good ideas about how to find women who served in the military? With men, their last names remain the same, but this will likely not be the case for women. Thus, last-name searches will be fruitless for locating women. I mention this situation because most of the membership of the USNTC Bainbridge Assn. is former WAVES. Their recruitment method for women is primarily by "passing the word" to those whom members have maintained contact with over the decades. Hence, the members who are women has likely peaked as all women who could be remembered and contacted has occurred. Membership of the USNTC Bainbridge is low with respect to those women, and this might be the case for other veteran's organizations of women. If the Alliance can provide insight into this matter, this might be an incentive for women's reunion groups to join the Alliance.
